Step 1 of 7 Next: Introduction and Questions

Register a Birth

Before you can book an appointment to register your child's birth, we will need to ask you some questions.

We can only register births that took place in Peterborough - this includes births at Peterborough City Hospital and home births in our district. If you are unsure whether the birth took place in Peterborough, check our map here.

If your child was born outside Peterborough, you cannot register the birth here - however, you can still make an appointment to come and see us and we will send the information to the district where the birth took place. This may delay the registration and the issuing of birth certificates slightly. Alternatively, you can book an appointment directly with the other district, and register there.

At your appointment you will be asked questions about yourself and your child.  If you are married or in a civil partnership, at least one parent at the appointment will need to be able to speak and understand English.  If you are not married or in a civil partnership then you will both need to speak and understand English - you cannot answer or interpret for each other.  If you do not meet these requirements, you will need to bring a third person along to help interpret.  If the registrar has concerns about your understanding of English the appointment may have to be abandoned and re-booked.

Birth certificates cost £12.50 each, and can be purchased at your appointment. We can only accept payment by card.

Finally, when you come to the appointment please bring a form of photo ID for each parent, and either the child's red book or other paperwork from the hospital or midwife showing the child's NHS number.

If you have any questions about registering a birth please visit our website for more information, or contact us on 01733 864646 or by email at peterboroughregisteroffice@peterborough.gov.uk.
